My story is one of betrayal and hurt. I wasn’t always this cruel or heartless. I loved once. And I don’t mean just “loved” in the physical sense but really and truly loved a woman. For the sake of this forum let’s call her Fatima. Fatima was everything I’ve ever wanted. She was beautiful and regal and I thought loyal. We lived in harmony for years before I invited my brother, Shahzaman, to spend some time in our castle. My brother didn’t look healthy and I worried about his health, he was adamant that nothing was wrong, however, and refused to speak with me about the subject. He looked like he was wasting away and I was desperately worried that he would fall ill and die. I left him to recline in the palace while I went away on a hunt. I do love a good hunt. When I returned, my brother was in high spirits. I was a little taken back on his speedy recovery. I demanded that he tell me the cause of his sickness and his recovery. He looked saddened by my words and bowed his head saying that he would tell me the cause of his sickness but not the cause of his recovery.
I settled for listening at first. He revealed to me that he had caught his wife cheating on him and it had destroyed him. I patted his shoulder, shocked at the news I had just heard. It was unbelievable how silly some women could be. Here was a man that ruled a country and could give a woman anything she asked, why in the name of God would she cheat on him? After he finished his tale, I pressed him for the cause of his recovery. Eventually, I commanded that he tell me, and he complied. Oh, how I wish I had let my curiosity subside! What he told me next made my heart burn and my head ache. Shahzaman said that he had witnessed my own sweet wife lying in the arms of another man. I was furious. Red flashed in my eyes, and I demanded my brother show me for I could not believe something this terrible unless I saw it with my own eyes. My brother reluctantly helped me spy on my wife and sure enough, there she lay with Mas’ud a slave! You can imagine my rage.
My brother convinced me to travel the world with him in hopes of finding someone who’s misfortune was worse than ours. How that was supposed to make me feel better, I’ll never know, but I was vulnerable and lost so I went with him. We took to the road and passed the time discussing our misfortunes. As we sat in a field taking a break from walking, a loud shout and rumble came from the middle of the ocean. I looked up to see a great swirling funnel of darkness. My brother and I climbed up a tree for protection. We watched in horror as a huge demon leaped out of the sea and stopped right in front of the very tree we had climbed. I was trembling in fear at this point and started preparing for death. There was no way we were going to survive this. However, the black demon was not interested in the tree, he simple sat a heavy glass chest down on the ground and unlocked it. I may have been scared, but my fear did not outweigh my curiosity. I watched in fascination as the demon pulled a full-grown woman out of the chest and placed her in front of him.
He told the woman that he was tired and that he was going to sleep. She sat down under the tree, the demon laid his head on her lap, and he soon began to snore. The lady then looked up and spotted us. My heart started thumping wildly – we were going to die. The woman however did not want our lives, she wanted something else. She threatened to wake the demon and have him kill us if we did not come down. Obviously we complied and came down out of the tree. She then demanded that we make love to her or she would have her husband demon kill us. You can no imagine the humiliation and horror I felt being subject to such unwanted advances. I never felt the same after that moment. Not only had I been violated but I had been forced to partake in this woman’s infidelity. This demon had gone to such lengths to keep his wife for himself, even going so far as to keep her in a box and yet she still found a way to be with other men. Not only that but she got joy out of it. I saw the glee in her eyes when she knew we would give her what she wanted.
My brother and I said we had found the one person in this world that has endured a fate worse than us. That demon will never know what happened that day. With this knowledge we returned home. My brother went back to his kingdom leaving me to deal with the actions of my wife. I immediately called my vizier and had him execute my wife. I wanted nothing to do with her. I wanted nothing to do with any woman. I wanted to declare that all women would be executed ridding the world of their unfaithfulness and dishonesty, but a man has his needs. Instead I decided to marry a woman each night and after making love to her I would have her killed. My plan was fool proof and no one opposed my rule. I am after all the king.
One night however, one of the vizier’s daughters, Shahrazad, specifically asked to become my wife. I thought this was odd, but if the stupid girl had a death wish who was I to stop her? We were married and I carried her off to my chambers. The girl begged me to let her sister come into the room so that they may say goodbye when the time came for her to die. I had had a long day and was tired of the girl’s whining so I complied. The girl’s sister stayed under the bed while we made love. It was easy to ignore her, with her beautiful sister as the distraction. After a while we were lying in silence when the girl’s sister comes out from underneath the bed and asks for a story. My new wife was happy to comply. I rolled over intent on ignoring them but couldn’t help but overhear the story. She told a gripping tale about a merchant and a demon. Just as the story was getting good with the demon just about to strike the merchant dead, Shahrazad fell silent.
Her sister complimented her story. Shahrazad replied that she had several other great and wonderful tales to tell, but she would only be able to tell them if I let her live. I rolled over and stared at her for a moment and then decided one more day couldn’t hurt. To make a long story short, she kept telling long wonderful stories and I wanted to hear the endings of them. After several months her stories and sweet demeanor wore me down. Since then, I’ve stopped threatening to kill her and she still tells me wonderful stories. She has also given me three beautiful children. It’s taken me a long time to learn to trust women again, but with Shahrazad’s help I think I can do it. Of course, Shahrazad makes anything seem possible.
